The surah that opens with the oath of the Divine One swearing by The Sun as it shines out with morning’s radiance. It is named after "the sun" (al-shams), mentioned in verse 1. The central theme of the surah touch upon purifying or corrupting the soul, with the tribe of Thamūd given as an example of corruption.

AS-SHAMS
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا ﴿١﴾
١ - سورج کی قسم اور اس کی روشنی کی .
[91:1] By the sun and its brightness
[Transliteration] Wash shamsi wa duhaa haa
وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَاهَا ﴿٢﴾
٢ - اور چاند کی جب اس کے پیچھے نکلے .
[91:2] And [by] the moon when it follows it
[Transliteration] Wal qamari izaa talaa haa
وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّاهَا ﴿٣﴾
٣ - اور دن کی جب اُسے چمکا دے .
[91:3] And [by] the day when it displays it
[Transliteration] Wannahaari izaa jallaa haa
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَاهَا ﴿٤﴾
٤ - اور رات کی جب اُسے چھپا لے .
[91:4] And [by] the night when it covers it
[Transliteration] Wallaili izaa yaghshaa haa
وَالسَّمَاءِ وَمَا بَنَاهَا ﴿٥﴾
٥ - اور آسمان کی اور اس ذات کی جس نے اسے بنایا .
[91:5] And [by] the sky and He who constructed it
[Transliteration] Wassamaaa'i wa maa banaahaa
وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا ﴿٦﴾
٦ - اور زمین کی اور اس کی جس نے اسے پھیلایا .
[91:6] And [by] the earth and He who spread it
[Transliteration] Wal ardi wa maa tahaahaa
وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا ﴿٧﴾
٧ - اور انسان کی اور اس کی جس نے اس (کے اعضا) کو برابر کیا .
[91:7] And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it
[Transliteration] Wa nafsinw wa maa sawwaahaa
فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا ﴿٨﴾
٨ - پھر اس کو بدکاری (سے بچنے) اور پرہیزگاری کرنے کی سمجھ دی .
[91:8] And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
[Transliteration] Fa-alhamahaa fujoorahaa wa taqwaahaa
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا ﴿٩﴾
٩ - کہ جس نے (اپنے) نفس (یعنی روح) کو پاک رکھا وہ مراد کو پہنچا .
[91:9] He has succeeded who purifies it,
[Transliteration] Qad aflaha man zakkaahaa
وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ دَسَّاهَا ﴿١٠﴾
١٠ - اور جس نے اسے خاک میں ملایا وہ خسارے میں رہا .
[91:10] And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].
[Transliteration] Wa qad khaaba man dassaahaa
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا ﴿١١﴾
١١ - (قوم) ثمود نے اپنی سرکشی کے سبب (پیغمبر کو) جھٹلایا .
[91:11] Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,
[Transliteration] Kazzabat Samoodu bi taghwaahaaa
إِذِ انْبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا ﴿١٢﴾
١٢ - جب ان میں سے ایک نہایت بدبخت اٹھا .
[91:12] When the most wretched of them was sent forth.
